How to measure for a home sauna

Measure the cabin, installation envelope and delivery route as three separate tasks.

Measure usable width, depth and height, then add the allowances in the exact model’s current installation documents. Exterior dimensions alone cannot establish fit.

Start with the actual installation location

Measure between the nearest obstructions, including trim, shelves, pipes and sloping ceilings. Take more than one reading; use the smallest usable dimension. Record the units with the measurements and keep a sketch showing which side faces the entrance. A “two-person” label describes a seller’s capacity category, not a standard footprint.

Before comparing products, decide whether the space is indoors or outdoors. A sheltered patio does not turn an indoor-only cabinet into an outdoor model. Floor condition, moisture, ventilation and maintenance access remain separate questions.

Add the model’s documented allowances

Keep the exterior measurement separate from the minimum installation envelope. Side, rear, overhead and front requirements may serve different purposes: assembly, ventilation, door opening, heat clearance or future servicing. Do not substitute one brand’s allowance for another.

For example, the linked Sun Home sheets distinguish cabin size from installation space. Equinox 2 documentation gives a different rear allowance from a simple all-round wall gap. The tool preserves documented values and marks any unresolved direction as unknown.

Use the result to prepare the next conversation

Enter measured space in the fit tool. A known conflict means one of the checked conditions fails. “Needs confirmation” means the data cannot support a positive conclusion; it does not mean the product will necessarily fail.

Save or print the result and ask the seller for the exact kit revision, complete minimum room dimensions, door opening and service requirements. If the documents disagree, resolve that discrepancy before using the result to place an order.

A small change that changes the result

Suppose the measured room is wider than the cabin body but narrower than the body plus the documented side allowances. The exterior comparison passes; the installation-width comparison fails. Increasing the ceiling measurement cannot fix that width conflict. The tool evaluates each direction separately.

If the front allowance is missing, the result remains unresolved even after the known width and height requirements pass. The useful next step is to ask for the required front/door clearance, not to assume zero. Keep a copy of the exact drawing with your room sketch.

A wall finish can change the answer

Eclipse 2’s current assembly guide distinguishes an open room with bare walls from combustible wall coverings and alcoves. It gives no side/rear gap for bare walls, 20 inches to combustible coverings, and a 4–6 inch alcove range. A single universal side-gap number would lose that distinction. The tool retains the conditions as questions rather than assuming a wall type.

Almost Heaven’s current product FAQ describes 12 inches above the cabin as ideal assembly space and discusses smaller margins. That is different from a mandatory minimum. Solstice 1’s specific assembly step calls for 8 inches at the rear while its family owner manual gives a general 4 inches; the profile keeps the discrepancy visible.
